When to replace your air purifier filters

HEPA filters and UV-C lamps run about 12 months; activated carbon is 6–12, depending on what you’re asking it to absorb. Here’s the schedule for each unit we supply, and what makes any of it wear out sooner.

The short version

On most portable units the HEPA filter and the UV-C lamp run about 12 months, and activated carbon runs 6 to 12 — nearer six in a kitchen, clinic or anywhere with a steady odour load, nearer twelve in a quiet office. Pre-filters, where a unit has one, need changing every three to six months. At the twelve-month mark everything is due at once, which is why an annual service is the sensible unit of maintenance.

What each part is doing

HEPA filter

About 12 months

Captures fine airborne particles — dust, pollen, smoke and other particulates. It works by physically trapping them in a dense pleated media, so it fills up over time. A loaded HEPA restricts airflow, which means less air moving through the unit and less of the room being treated per hour.

Activated carbon filter

6–12 months

Adsorbs odours and volatile organic compounds — cooking smells, solvents, off-gassing from new furnishings. Carbon works by surface area, and that surface saturates. How fast depends entirely on the odour load, which is why the interval is a range rather than a number: a busy clinic or kitchen is nearer six months, a quiet office nearer twelve. Once saturated it stops adsorbing, and a saturated bed can release some of what it holds back into the airflow.

UV-C lamp

About 12 months

UV-C lamp output falls steadily through its service life. A lamp that still lights is not necessarily still performing — visible glow and rated output are different things, and manufacturers rate these lamps for roughly a year of continuous operation for that reason.

Pre-filter

3–6 months

A coarse first stage that catches hair, lint and larger dust before it reaches the HEPA behind it. It’s cheap and it’s protective — changing it on time is what stops the far more expensive HEPA from loading up early.

What makes them wear out sooner

  • Runtime. Ratings assume continuous operation. A unit on 24/7 reaches the end of an interval faster than one running office hours.
  • Fan speed. More air through the filter means more loading. Units kept on high wear filters down noticeably faster.
  • Dust load. Construction or renovation nearby, unsealed floors, high foot traffic — all shorten filter life, sometimes dramatically.
  • Occupancy. A busy operatory, classroom or waiting room puts far more through a filter than a quiet office.
  • Cooking, pets and smoke. These load the carbon stage well before the HEPA is finished.

Signs it’s due

Less air coming out. The most reliable signal. A loaded filter restricts flow, and you can usually feel it at the outlet.

The unit is working harder. Running at a higher fan speed to achieve what a lower speed used to.

Odours lingering. Usually the carbon stage rather than the HEPA.

Visible loading. Grey, matted media, or a pre-filter you can no longer see light through.

The calendar. Honestly the best one — filters degrade gradually, so by the time you notice, you’ve been running degraded for a while.

At twelve months, everything is due

HEPA and lamp reach the end of their year together, and carbon is due by then at the latest. Replacing them one at a time means three orders and three chances to forget. Common questions

How often should you change a HEPA filter in an air purifier?

About every 12 months under ordinary continuous use. Heavy dust, high occupancy, high fan speeds or nearby construction shorten that. A HEPA filter cannot be washed or vacuumed clean — doing so damages the media and reduces what it captures.

Can I clean a HEPA filter instead of replacing it?

No. HEPA media is a dense mat of fine fibres; washing or vacuuming it tears and compacts that structure. The filter will look cleaner and perform worse. Pre-filters are the exception — many are washable, and the manual will say so.

What happens if I don’t replace the filters?

Airflow falls first. A loaded filter means less air moving through the unit, so less of the room is treated each hour, and the fan works harder to compensate. A saturated carbon filter stops adsorbing odours and can release some of what it holds. None of it is sudden — performance drifts down gradually, which is why the calendar is more reliable than waiting to notice.

Does a UV-C lamp need replacing if it still lights up?

Yes. Output falls steadily over the lamp’s life while the visible glow persists, so a lamp that looks fine can be well below its rated output. Manufacturers rate these lamps for roughly 12 months of continuous operation.

Do I have to use the original manufacturer’s filters?

No. In both Canada and the United States a manufacturer generally cannot void your warranty simply because a compatible part is fitted — they would have to show the part caused the failure. We cover this in detail on our filter warranty page.
